It’s no ordinary day when you pop up in First Lady Michelle Obama’s Instagram feed – and King College Prep graduate Markida is certainly no ordinary young lady. A 2015 recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship, awarded to just 1,000 students nationally each year, Markida is making significant strides towards her future. “From day one, Markida told me she wanted to be a judge.” SLAM mentor Christy reminiscences of then 8th grader Markida.
In the spring of 2011 Christy met Markida at SLAM, our high-energy, Life-on-Life connecting, outreach ministry. Even though these two came from very different backgrounds, with very different interests, they hit it off immediately. “Despite these differences we are actually very similar. We are outgoing, unafraid, followers of Christ, learners, and devoted to friends and family,” Christy shares. Markida adds, “I am a proud child of GOD.”
Over their five years together, Markida has shown unwavering commitment to academics and a passionate pursuit to one day care for her mother who has made many sacrifices for her. In October when Markida’s mother was unable to take time from work to visit colleges, Christy stepped in and went on several college visits, including one to Howard University in Washington, D.C.–Markida’s dream college. And this is precisely where Markidawill be starting classes this fall!
“…No one should, let their circumstances or environment limit them from where God has called them to be. I want my peers, family, and community to first believe in God themselves and lastly to understand that life has more to offer than what they see in their everyday life. My ultimate goal is to give back to my community! I plan to do that by being a mentor to young people. I was inspired to become a judge at the age of seven…I had dreams on limiting racial incarceration and I wanted the power to do just that.” -Markida
